My family loves LocoPops, and it was at one of our weekly visits that I started thinking just how such a simple space and simple pleasure can bring so much joy. There's a lot to be said about the popsicles, of course, and their natural ingredients and the creativity and variety of flavors, but for me, I think the beauty of LocoPops is in the vibe of the space. There are no meltdowns. No lines. Our 3-year-old doesn't scream about what she wants nor do, seemingly, any other children. Aside from occasional drips on our shirts, it's the experience that brings us back. Families read books, talk to others, read the community bulletin board, admire the work of young artists, or just catch up with one another. It's a chance to step back and enjoy something a little sweet.
I wanted to explore the idea of this space a little further with my camera. When I photograph families and children for my business, I try to capture them in quiet, natural moments that reveal true emotions and personalities even in the most subtle gesture. I decided to take the same approach with this project. I simply photographed willing subjects for 5 or 10 minutes each while they ate their favorite LocoPop. The camera revealed what I'd suspected all along: the LocoPop vibe is not a spell cast solely on my family. Each child, it seemed, was in his or her own little zone of satisfaction while enjoying their popsicle. What I saw - giggles, smiles, concentration, gentle assistance from a parent, or the glance at a friend - reminded me what a treasure LocoPops is for our community.
